About image

NGC5053 is a globular cluster located in the constellation Coma Berenices, about 1 degree away from the brighter cluster M53.

NGC 5053 is known to be one of the faintest and least concentrated globulars in our galaxy: chemical analyses have confirmed that it is indeed a globular cluster and not an open cluster. It contains approximately 3,500 stars (very few for a globular!) spread over a true diameter of 160 light-years and at a distance of approximately 50000 light-years.
