About image

The polar-ring galaxy NGC 2685 in Ursa Major is also known as the Helix Galaxy because it shows several polar rings wrapped around the major axis of the central galaxy.
It is thought that these polar rings are being formed when two galaxies interacts gravitationally.
A further prominent feature of NGC 2685 is an outer equatorial ring which exceeds the polar rings in size and has the same orientation as the spindle-like central galaxy.
The distance of NGC 2685 is around 46 million of light years.
