M 109

About image
M 109 is a barred spiral galaxy in Ursa Major constellation: its estimated distance is 55 million light years and the real diameter is about 120000 light years.
Its spiral structure is quite regular and the arms can be followed through an entire revolution.
Several other remote galaxies are visible in the field: the brightest two ones (at bottom side of the image and on the upper right side) are companions.
The galaxy is located about 1° from the bright star Phekda - Gamma Ursae Majoris.
The light of this star is very invasive, even if it is out of the field: some faint light stripes are visible in the upper side of the image, but are not so "disturbing".
