About image

The Draco Galaxy Triplet is a group of three galaxies in Draco constellation.
The beauty of this group is due mainly to the different shapes of the three galaxies.
The spiral galaxy NGC 5985 is for sure the most photogenic one with its blue spiral arms and the yellow core.
Less “conventional” is the galaxy in the center of the group, NGC 5982, which shows a structures with shells caused by mergers with small galaxies with low mass.
Then there is NGC 5981, which is a spiral galaxy edge-on.
The estimated distances of NGC 5982 and NGC 5985 are around 137 million light years, while for NGC 5981 is 86 million: so the first two galaxies have also physical dimensions (and not only apparent dimensions) greater than NGC 5981.
