Arp 273

About image
Arp 273 is a couple of interacting galaxies in Andromeda constellation, at the distance of 345 million light years.
The name comes from the fact that they were catalogued at position 273 in the "Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies" compiled by Halton Arp in 1966: the two galaxies are catalogued also as UGC 1810 (the bigger one) and UGC 1813 (the smaller one).
UGC 1810 is seen face-on, with very narrow spiral arms which turn into tidal tails, with the outer ring-shaped structure making almost a complete revolution around the galaxy.
UGC 1813 is seen more edge-on and in high resolution images shows active regions with young stars. so it is supposed that in the past it has already passed through UGC 1810.
The image is a crop of the original frame as the two galaxies are very small: UGC 1810 has dimensions only 1.9'x1.3'.
Several other remote galaxies are visible in the background.
